IMISEM 2024 builds on IMISEM 2018, providing an update for most of the countries, except for Hong Kong, Macau, and Malaysia. IMISEM 2024 included a revision of the original 2018 Dataset and an additional information field registering if there was a policy change. The collection for IMISEM 2024 data was conducted between 2024 and 2026 by the MIGPOL project (Migration Policy Database) at Uppsala University, Sweden, and was jointly funded by the Swedish Research Council and Uppsala University through the research infrastructure Demscore (Democracy, Environment, Migration, Social Policy, Conflict, and Representation).
IMISEM 2024 followed largely the same structure of data collection, coding and validation as IMISEM 2018. However, IMISEM 2024 update includes an adjusted selection of variables from the citizenship section in order to avoid redundancy with the Global Citizenship Observatory, which recently extended its data collection rules to cover the IMISEM countries as well. Consequently, while the IMISEM 2018 reports covered 288 main questions divided into over 800 sub-questions, the 2024 IMISEM update now covers 173 main questions and 761 subquestions.
With regard to the format, the reports of IMISEM 2024 largely follow the structure of the IMISEM 2018 country reports. The data is presented by question, providing a numerical code, the corresponding answer option, an explanation, and the sources used to answer the question. New for IMISEM 2024 is the adoption of a fifth row which documents changes in the corresponding policy between 2018 and 2024.
